November 18th, 2010 – So several of you have expressed interest in the collaboration project, and those that I have contact info for through your comments have been added to the shared DropBox folder. If anyone else wants to be part of the project, please comment on this post and enter your contact info in the form (email addresses won’t be shown publicly). Also, please tell everyone about this project as the more people we have, the better it’ll be.
After reading the comments on the last post about the project, I realized that I may not have been clear about what I had in mind. Originally I had thought that we would all submit samples into a shared directory and then everyone would create their own song from the same sample pool. At the end, we would share what we had all created.
I discussed this a bit with Travis from SilverLakeStudio, and Jon over at AudioGeekZine (who just had a beautiful baby girl so head over to his site and send him well-wishes) and they thought that instead we might create one song together with tasks separated to each interested person. I think that this is what many of you had thought I meant, and this is certainly more in keeping with the collaborative spirit. However, I’m not sure how this will work logistically as certain tasks are linear and cannot be done in tandem with others. For example, someone responsible for mixing cannot begin work before the song has been produced.
We would also need to make sure that everyone had their tasks done on time, and that no one bailed on the project. Because of this difficulty, I hadn’t considered this type of project. I’m thinking that perhaps we can start with the “common sample pool” project, see how that goes, and then try out the real collaborative project. What do you guys think? I could really use the feedback to decide where to go with this! Oh, and before I forget, I really appreciate the interest everyone has shown. Let’s get this thing going!

I’ll paste the idea I had when we chatted yesterday
—
Me: logistical nightmare you say
how about everyone uses Reaper and stock plugs. We have a rotation system for changes.
so only 1 person is changing the session file at a time.
Sean: well it’s more a nightmare in making sure people get stuff finished on time so the next person can work on it
me: if someone misses their day they miss out until the following week.

Adding to that, if virtual instruments are being used, they can be rendered to wav and the vst is disabled and saved with the session.
I would like to mix the final song, but I’m looking forward to passing the song around a few times and seeing how it takes shape.
I think a 2-3 hour limit of work for each contributor per week would prevent 1 person from completing the project or forcing it in one direction.
Great proposal y’all! Instead of just talking about the creation of music, we could actually make some . . . like one of those applied sciences courses. Some sort of time limit for each contribution is definitely a good idea.
Sign me up!

Bryan
beem me up scotty.
I’m game!
Too late for me to get in?
-A.
I’m interested —
As far as ideas. Just as a conversation starter thought, over on the Propellerhead forums a bunch of us did theme songs for an imaginary detective show named “Murder on the Rails”
Maybe there’s some theme we could explore or genre that suits (or challenges) everyone’s ability that would be fun.
@CD
That is an awesome idea!
Along the same lines, maybe we could do the title track to a fictitious blockbuster movie?
Bryan
@Bryan
Yeah — that sounds very cool.
How about
Peter pan vs predator?
@MOVEAIR
It’s bizarre, it’s out there, I LOVE IT!
I’d like to contribute. I’m good for either approach, just want to make something interesting.
Cheers.
Paul
What about devoting one or a small few people to mixing/arranging and all else contributing the elements?
…personally, I’m just fine putting in some guitar sounds/ideas…
Perhaps intermittently publishing some progress and then the ‘contributees’ could chime in on how their stuff’s being used?
Let’s just start the thing. ammirite?
I agree with JON . . however . . who starts and what is the theme?
I think its up to Sean to say GO.
Less talk more rock, or whichever the genre
Sean,
I just dropped you an email. I’m game for whatever the rules are. I appreciate being able to partake in such a collaboration. Standing by for the rules…
Best…
Doug
