June 26th, 2010 – Have you ever walked into a music store to buy guitar or microphone cables and been taken aback by the pricing on cables? What makes them so expensive? I think it’s probably the time and care needed to properly solder connections more than the materials. So if you have some time on your hands, you can make your own high quality cables and save a tonne of cash. AudioTuts has a great primer on making your own cables. Having made a lot of my own cables, including adapters for weird cable connections, it’s totally worth it to DIY. Bring your soldering iron outside and enjoy the summer weather while you’re at it!
