May 4th, 2010 – Not everyone is blessed to be able to make their living from music. For a while, I worked solely as a songwriter but the money I made wasn’t good enough to pay my living expenses, so I went back to working a normal 9-5. Now, I’m going back to working as a songwriter, and hoping what I’ve learned all these years will finally pay off. I’m not successful yet though, so I’m still working an office job to pay the bills.
What do you do to support your music habit?

I’m a traffic engineer by trade, but that all goes to paying the bills and keeping my kids in shoes. The money I spend on music is the money I earn from music – mostly piano tunings and running sound for special events like weddings at my church. Every now and then I get paid for playing, and I have, in the past, gotten royalties from CCLI for my music played in other churches.

I work as a software developer. It pays the bills and mortgage, but I find myself mentally drained after work. I wish I could work full time making tools in Max 4 Live, with music as a byproduct. Now if only I could figure out how to get paid for that…=/

I remember reading a similar thread posted in the djtechtools forum and interestingly enough most of the people were engineers/computer professionals – I wonder why that is? haha… that being said, I just graduated in civil engineering and am still on the job hunt =( so unfortunately I have nearly zero funds to support my music habit and upgrade my setup.. but i definitely plan to spoil myself when i have a steady 9-5.. maybe robert could hook me up with a transportation position?!?! however lately i’ve been contemplating becoming a starving artist.. choices choices..

@Du2x: Interestingly, I also have a technical background. Maybe people like us aren’t scared off by the perceived complexity of music production?

I work in IT, but I am pretty overwhelmed by the thought of recording/engineering/producing/mixing/mastering/et al. Add to that I have played keys in bands for nearly 20 years and I am a bit of a musical enigma
. I like to write songs and sing with my piano.
Only recently have I become more determined to learn this side of the music process. Thankfully there are a lot of cool guys like Sean to offer up a ton of useful information and insight that it’s not as daunting as it once was.

I work too many hours a day in a hospital – which is great for buying a lot of musical gear, but less great for learning how to use it!
