March 28th, 2010 – One of the hardest tasks in creating a good mix, is making sure each instrument sits nicely and doesn’t interfere with others. Of course, the more instruments there are, the more interactions there are to consider. No matter how nice something sounds on its own, when combined with other instruments with overlapping frequencies, muddiness is bound to occur.
Podcomplex has a great diagram showing what frequency ranges certain instruments inhabit so you can make more informed decisions on how to EQ each, to accomplish a nice-sounding mix. Of course, for those who are also producer/engineers, keeping in mind these frequency pockets can help when deciding what instruments to include in the production.
Careful EQing is one of the hardest skills to accomplish when mixing a song, and it is also one of the foundational skills. Just remember, more often than not, the situation will call for cutting frequencies rather than boosting them.
