February 19th, 2010 – I’m sure that tuning a guitar by using a strobing light isn’t a new concept, but the Stimmmopped is a cool DIY project nonetheless. Basically, by flashing an LED at exact frequencies and plucking the string with the device, will allow you to see if the string is out of tune or not. If the string is sharp or flat, the LED will still look like it’s flashing, but when the frequency is right, the LED will stay solid.
This kind of tuner is great for acoustic players in a loud environment, where acoustic tuners will be overwhelmed. However, you’ll need to be in a place that will be dark enough for you to see the LEDs still; so there’s a trade off. Still a cool project to make. The material costs excluding the circuit board are about five and a half Euros. I have no idea where to buy the board, but the site has the schematics to have your own made.
