February 16th, 2010 – I’m sure most of you know about the Sundance Film Festival. Well what you may not know is that they have a program that links film composers, or aspiring film composers, with veteran film composers and film makers.

Each year, several composers are chosen to be mentored by established film composers, and get together with film makers to learn how to work together (if I make it seem like a battle, it sometimes can be). There are both documentary and feature film composer labs, each running in the summer. The documentary lab is a week long, while the feature film lab is two weeks. Travel, accommodation and meals are provided for the chosen composers.

The fee to be considered is $35 (the same price as films vying for Sundance) and the deadline to apply is April 3rd. A lot of composers apply, but there are very few positions. However, it’s a great opportunity to collaborate with other talented people, and network within an industry that is pretty hard to break into. If you’re at all interested in composing for film for a living, you should give it a shot.
