February 23rd, 2010 – Livid Instruments, maker of the Block, has teased us with the MIDI DIY for a while now. Well, it’s finally here, but is now encompassed in the Builder series.
Livid’s Builder starts with the Brain (which replaces the MIDI DIY), and you add modular pieces to complete whatever controller you’d like from there. You can purchase specialized boards for push buttons, one for rotary knobs, and one for linear faders, as well as the associated accessories and connectors.
While I’m sure you could use whatever components you wanted with the Brain, the Builder series is meant for those new to electronics. It’s much easier (albeit a little more expensive), to buy parts that fit together and you know that work, directly from Livid Instruments.
The Brain itself is $200 while the additional boards are $10-12 each. You’ll need several to build something like the Block. It’s a pretty cool idea, and one that will appeal to a lot of DIYers out there.
