February 21st, 2010 – I’ve been tooling around with Logic for almost 10 years now, and one of the additions in version 8 that I never really used was MainStage. MainStage is an application meant for performing live. You can use instruments and effects from Logic combined with live looping and MIDI triggering, to pull off Ableton-esque performances.
With version 9 of Logic, MainStage was beefed up with better amp modeling, and better looping features making it more enticing for musicians. Since I haven’t done any live gigging for a while, I asked my friend who gigs several times a week to show me how he uses it. It looks pretty nifty and he said it was pretty solid for his needs.
If you have either Logic 8 or 9 and want to find out more about MainStage, AudioPropeller has a series of tutorials on how to use it. I’m not able to embed the Vimeo videos, so if you’re interested, check out the AudioPropeller site, or there are a couple of videos on the Synthtopia page below.

Thanks for the mention – much appreciated. Just added another series concerning the setup and use of Loopback and Playback – some pretty cool plugins.
I’m currently using Ableton for my rig, but I think that MainStage is a great tool for people who have it and don’t want to make the outlay on Ableton Suite. And as you mentioned, the amp and effects modeling is just great.
