January 12th, 2010 – So what’s a songwriter to do when a great idea appears and there are no instruments or recording gear around save for your own voice and an iPhone? Well, you pony up $3 bucks for Wave Machine Lab’s Voice Band iPhone app.

By using your own voice, Voice Band is able to detect pitch, and volume. Using that information, you can manipulate up to 10 instruments to create a song. For example, you can sing notes into Voice Band and have it translate into guitar power chords like in the video below. You can also apply effects and “jam” along to your iTunes library.

I don’t have an iPhone but this seems like a genuinely useful application when you’re on the road and inspiration strikes. Apparently there’s a pro version in the works, that may be able to output MIDI information from your voice too. Check out the demo video embedded below.

  1. Sean – Voice Band is wicked.

After using it, you immediately make a list of things that you wish it could do – more sounds, etc – but it’s a very cool tool as is.

I had not heard about the Pro version – will keep my eyes out for that, too!

  3. Sounds like I need to get an iPhone or at least an iPod Touch. I’ve been waiting until they have one that can fit my iTunes library before I take the plunge. Also, might be a good idea to wait until June :p
