January 19th, 2009 – Last week, I lamented my inability to finish an album for myself. I’ve written songs for other people, and even songs for myself, but never any collection of songs that could cohesively be an album. It’s always been on my to-do list, but I’ve never had the satisfaction of drawing a line through that entry.
Dan Foley from PodComplex suggested that I take a look at the RPM Challenge. It is not a competition, and there aren’t any prizes. The RPM Challenge is simply a personal challenge you undertake in the month of February, to complete a full album of 35 minutes of material or more.
At first I thought to myself, “That’s too little time!”. But then I realized that it’s not about creating perfection, it’s just about creating. Sometimes we need that extra little kick to get started, and the RPM Challenge might just be what the doctor ordered. I say I’m going to do a lot of these contests, but I often procrastinate until it’s too late. Lately though, I’ve been on a productivity kick, and the RPM Challenge may allow me to finally complete a full album, something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. Check out the link below for more information, and special thanks to Dan for providing the heads-up!
In an unrelated note, I’m 30 votes away from qualifying for Stage 1 of the Let’s Mix DJ competition and the deadline is coming up quickly. If you haven’t voted for me yet, I’d appreciate it if you could. Thanks! Here’s the link to my entry: http://www.letsmix.com/mix/23392/gameplan_for_invasion

Thanks Sean! It’s a great challenge, with the focus on getting it done rather than getting it right. Just adding this ‘constraint’ actually opens up a lot of possibilities, and you stop second-guessing yourself…you might do things you wouldn’t do otherwise, as certain inhibitions drop away – because when it’s over, you can just say – hey, it only took a month to do…
