December 11th, 2009 – I’ve been using the Vestax Spin and djay with my normal iTunes library, but I have a lot of DJ remixes that I’d like to incorporate into the sets. I haven’t added them because I like everything neat and tidy, and the library is set up to be album biased. Since DJ remixes are all singles, I wondered if it was possible to have multiple iTunes libraries. As it turns out, it is.
There are two reasons you’d want to separate normal and DJ libraries. For one, it keeps your normal library clean of tonnes of singles. It also makes it easier to find a track quickly in your streamlined DJ library. To create an alternate library (and access it after), simply press and hold the “Option” key while iTunes is booting up. Just a quick note, you’ll want to make sure iTunes isn’t organizing or copying files, that way you can access the same MP3 file in both libraries without duplicating it.
In the Youtube video below, I show how to access another library, and how djay decides what library to open. Sorry, there’s no higher quality Vimeo option. For some reason I can’t upload the movie.
