– Since the Triton I normally use to trigger MIDI is broken, I’ve been using a Korg MS20 controller (the one that comes with the Legacy Collection). In Reason, the MS20 is mapped as a standard keyboard. Unfortunately, the MS20 only has 3 octaves, and no dedicated buttons to change octaves.

I can change octaves within the transport in Logic but I can’t figure it out in Reason. It’s a real pain when I’m using Redrum and I’m auditioning sounds; it’s almost easier to just draw in the notes. Is there a way to change octaves in Reason? Is there a MIDI learn feature where I can assign a button on my MS20 to changing octaves?

I don’t know of a way to shift octaves within Reason. Reason only seems to allow you to transpose after notes have been recorded. The only way I can think of is to use a Rewire host, in your case, Logic, to transpose your midi notes prior to the midi entering Reason.

If I had a three octave keyboard that didn’t have native transpose capability, I would use Rewire to run Ableton Live into Reason and then use Ableton’s midi note shift plugin to feed Reason higher and lower octaves. Using Ableton’s midi note transpose plugin would allow me to use MIDI learn to control the octaves using controllers.

  2. @Joel Abbott : Yeah, I’m getting around the limitations of my keyboard by using Reason rewired to Logic, but wondered if there was another way of doing it in Reason. Based upon a bit of Googling…it doesn’t appear there is. Thanks for the advice though!
