Reason

December 1st, 2009 – Since I’ve added electro to the list of music genres I like, I’ve become much more interested in using Reason to produce music. Watching the various Reason tutorials on Youtube has gotten me hyped up to use Reason’s built-in synthesizer Thor especially. There are so many great sounding presets that it’s hard not to find a sound you’ll like. As well, Reason’s pattern-based effects are very powerful.

The one part of Reason that’s terrible, and I’m sure why Propellerhead released Record, is that you cannot record audio, or even import tracks for vocal remixing. Sure you can import audio tracks recorded in other software into ReCycle, chop it up and then import it into the Dr. Rex sampler, but that’s a huge pain.

Of course, what Propellerhead suggests, is that you slave Reason using ReWire to a DAW host. As far as I can tell in Logic, you can only send external MIDI information for Reason’s software instruments. What if I want to use some of Reason’s powerful effects plug-ins on an audio track in Logic?

I’d love it if Reason could be a totally standalone remix solution, but right now it’s not. I hope that some aspects of Record get included in Reason 5 whenever that comes out. I’d imagine that Reason likes to deal with clips because they’re easier to control when working with tempo and pitch changes, one of Reason’s strengths.

How do you use Reason? If you don’t, why not?

  1. Simply put : I don’t use it. Why ? Because my wallet is not extensible indefinitely.

I’ve try it – a friend is a great fan of it and has shown me the v3 some years. The patching is fun – but since I’ve never touch a “traditionnal” synth before, it means nothing to me.
The timeline is unpleasant to use too – but maybe it’s something that take time to like ? An acquired taste ?

It seem to be a fun tool. But for now I have no interest in it. Can’t be everywhere !
