December 7th, 2009 – The analog versus digital debate is a never-ending one in the audio engineering world. Of course, audio engineers aren’t the only ones who argue about it, DJ’s do too. Is the sound quality coming out of a laptop DJ’s system, as good as (or even better) than that coming from an analog mixer?

DJ TechTools took the question to various manufacturers, software developers, and generally smart people, to find out what the objective consensus is. Interestingly, the potential for digital systems (using high quality interfaces of course) is higher since the dynamic range controlled by the software offers more possibilities for controlling the signal before it reaches the DA converter and possibly clipping.

Conversely, each analog mixer has unique “colouring” that can be pleasing to the ear. Of course, higher end digital systems have effects plugins that emulate this “colouring”. Whether it comes close or not, is still up for debate. Check out the link below for what the experts said.
