November 6th, 2009 – This Monday, Vestax will be releasing its new DJ controller, Spin, in Canadian and US Apple stores. I admit that I’m not always the first to hear about DJ gear, but shouldn’t there have been some fanfare and hype about it building up to this launch?!
Contrary to DJ’s and controllerists who are pissed off that Vestax released a “low end” controller to appeal to the DJ Hero playing kids, I am super excited about this. It’s set to retail for $249 USD, and includes the controller, a microphone (for Lil’ Jon style shout outs no doubt) and Djay software. The controller is the thing to get excited about, as you get a built-in soundcard, high resolution jog wheels, and EQ faders.
For that pricepoint, I can’t think of any manufacturers off the top of my head that include both the controller and a built-in soundcard. Of course, the Vestax Spin isn’t built with metal or as nice faders and knobs as its big brothers the VCI-100 or the VCI-300. Even in the pictures, you can tell that it’s not a “pro” level product.
Quite frankly, its low end status doesn’t bother me. Add an additional MIDI trigger for cue points and you could have a serious little set up for a very affordable price. According to the DJ Techtools article, the Spin is MIDI compliant meaning that, although it’s set up to work with Djay software right now, it could be mapped to Traktor Pro.
I’m so excited I could pee myself. Of course, that may be due to all the tea I’ve been drinking today.

Ok. Seem interesting
Now I want this, but without the audio part, and without software. Pretty please ?

@Sebastien : It’s a MIDI device, so you should be able to remap it to your needs in whatever software you would like
I’m sure VJ’s will find a good use for it

@ Saul C : Good thing I held off on the VCI-100. Will probably still upgrade to that down the road…but this controller looks like fun! It’ll be good for me to try out making music with it (I’ll probably use it as a MIDI controller, and less with the Djay software), and see if I’m any good with this type of controller before I spend the coin on something nicer.
