November 30th, 2009 – A couple weeks ago, I posted a track I had produced several years ago, and explained how it was put together. In the post, I went over how I typically set up a vocal session. Check out that post for some ideas on how you might set up your own vocals.
AudioTuts has released a new post where they go over pretty much the same method step-by-step. If you wanted more detail into the process, head on over for a useful read. On somewhat of a tangent, it bothers me that many engineers work so hard on getting a good drum sound and spend so little time on the vocals.
I’m convinced it’s because it’s difficult to be blunt about a person’s singing. Singing is one of the most personal things a person can do. So undoubtedly after many episodes of communication breakdown, engineers are a little gun-shy about hurting the client’s feelings. However, if you prove that you know what you are doing, the client is more likely to trust what you say, and accept constructive criticism. The product will be better, and that will make everyone happier.
