November 20th, 2009 – I’m going to be honest with you: I like both Justin Timberlake and Timbaland. They’re great artists, and they’ve written a lot of songs that I like. However, when they get together to write songs, I always had a voice in the back of my mind that whined “This song sounds a lot like the last song”.
Well earlier this year, when I heard Rihanna’s “Rehab”, it was something that I couldn’t get out of my mind. To prove to myself that I wasn’t crazy, I decided to make a mash-up. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get all the songs I wanted to get, so I only remixed “Rehab” with 50 Cent’s (featuring JT) “Ayo Technology”.
“Cry Me A River” and T.I.’s “Dead and Gone” could easily have been inserted into the mash-up if instrumental and acapellas had been available. Alongside the similar overall “feeling” of all the songs I listed, you’ll notice that they are in the same key (or a compatible one), and often have the same tempo. Without further ado, here is the mash-up. Note that nothing has been added, just cutting and pasting.

Nice work…looks like you’ve cracked the code! And I don’t think he’s ‘tired of using technology’ at all…

Exactly, you found Timbo’s formula. Now you just need to break it down into tempo, vocal pitch, drum pattern, and beat pattern.
