October 15th, 2009 – Samson has just released the new Zoom Q3. Like the other digital recorders in its product range, the Q3 features dual XY capsules for capturing stereo sound. Unlike its other recorders, the Q3 actually records video as well as audio.

The Q3 certainly isn’t going to compete with products like the Flip Mino HD, especially since its maximum recorded resolution is 640 by 480, but for those people who are recording their bands for Youtube or other similar situations where the audio takes precedence, there really is no other competitor.

Of course, if you wanted to do it professionally, you’d get a real video camera and a real audio recorder, but that would make your combined investment much higher than the $250 that the Zoom Q3 retails for. I have a feeling most people who are looking at this type of recorder are looking for a fun way to record events like birthday parties, not cinematic masterpieces.

Interestingly, the new iPod Nano’s also record low resolution video. I wonder if video makes devices like this more enticing to the average consumer.
