October 19th, 2009 – Yesterday, I was visiting Nijo-jo in Osaka which is a shogunate residence built in the 1600′s. To alert the shogun to the presence of spies, the floors were constructed to be intentionally squeaky. As such, they are called “Nightingale Floors”.

I spent a good half an hour recording the sounds of tourists walking back and forth on the floors. People must have thought I was odd. I’m sure it’s not even close to the oddest thing recorded, and I probably won’t ever have the need to use recording.

What’s the oddest thing you’ve recorded?

  1. Kitchen tool.

Recording sound seem to be fun. I should stop buying synth and midi controller and look after a good recorder !

  2. I’ve recorded the vibrations of my air conditioner, fridge and freezer with a contact mic. I guess that’s odd.

  3. @Sebastien : There are lots of great recorders out right now that are inexpensive and sound good. It’s pretty fun just going out and recording ambient sounds.

@Jon : Those are odd sounds. You like 60hz hums? lol

  4. It’s not really a ‘thing’, but I once recorded a singer who claimed to be channing the voice of Enrico Caruso so it could be analysed to see if he was telling the truth…

  5. That should have said ‘channeling’, duh

  6. @ Ian Shepherd : Don’t leave us in suspense…was he really channeling? lol
