QOTD : How do you deal with deteriorating headphone cups?

September 18th, 2009 – I have an old pair of headphones that I love. I know their sonic characteristics very well and they’ve worn in quite nicely. The problem is that the very thin vinyl that covers the foam portions of the cup has begun to deteriorate badly.

Every time I wear them, more of the vinyl flakes off and some gets stuck in my hair. Of course I don’t even notice until I’m out eating dinner and a black flake drops into my food. I want to save the headphones as they no longer sell them, but I’m unsure how or what to replace the vinyl with.

Have any of you fixed headphones with the same problems before? Any ideas or links on where I might find information on how to deal with it would be much appreciated. I found some replacements on Ebay but how have you dealt with it?

I have the same problem my ATH-M30s started doing that recently after 5 years of use. I don’t know if there’s anything you can do other than treat yourself to a new pair.

@Jon : Damn…I really like these ones. Guess it’s time to save up for some AKG K701′s. Might take me a while though lol
