September 28th, 2009 – One of the reasons I use Logic is that it comes with some very powerful plugins, making it a fantastic value. Everything from the EXS24 sampler, to the EVP88 keyboard emulator, all of it sounds great. One of the most powerful instruments included with Logic is the ES2 synthesizer. For a newbie to the synth world like myself, just looking at the interface is enough to illicit nightmares. But hearing other artists use the ES2 to its full potential is awe-inspiring.
Of course, there’s always the Apple presets for the ES2, but that would be taking the easy way out. Really learning and exploiting the ES2 provides a better understanding of sound design techniques and distinct sounds that will make your work stand out. Both AudioTuts and Sound on Sound magazine have great articles on what each parameter of the ES2 does. AudioTuts even provides audio samples through the sound design process so you can hear how each of the changes you make differ from the original. Very cool stuff.
