August 14th, 2009 – What you’re looking at are Spacetek’s Rodriguez DJ Booths. Basically, they are custom-built to your specifications using a particle board, plastic, and exotic wood veneer. They start at about three grand and go up from there depending on what options you want. Regardless of their price, they’re pretty darned spiffy.
As I was looking at them today, it dawned on me that these are not really for places for DJ’s, but rather a DJ’s place. By this I mean that I doubt you would see one of these in a club. I have a feeling that these stands would be found in an intimate environment, like the DJ’s own home. As we discussed in an earlier post, aesthetics can be helpful in promoting creativity. But in a club, it is less about what your booth looks like, and more about the energy of the crowd. At home or in a private studio, something like the Spacetek may lend a higher class feel to the atmosphere.
Actually, I’m thinking that this type of design would work well for those of us with a small home studio set up. Because we usually don’t have racks and racks of gear, a custom desk would make our small space look high end. That would be a good thing if we’re bringing in outside clients. If only I had paid attention in shop class…
