August 10th, 2009 – I was reading about Velvet Revolver today, and apparently they are looking for a singer to replace Scott Weiland. It got me thinking about how few super groups actually succeed. Is it because the expectations are so high? Or is it just because there are so many egos that its difficult to get a good product?

Sometimes I think that record labels think that the star power of a band alone will carry them, but this hasn’t historically been the case. I also wonder if this curse follows other bands that form from the ashes of another. Does the history of a band’s members influence your view of the new band? Are you more likely to listen to a new band if you already know its members?

  1. The only super band I’ve ever liked were A perfect Circle, Queens of the stone age, and Nine Inch Nails. I dont know if you’d consider them supergroups

  2. @ Jon : I’m also a fan of those bands, although I’m thinking super as in Chickenfoot, Velvet Revolver, where the members are so famous that even the general public knows who they are. Although maybe Chickenfoot isn’t so much a super group either.
