The FM3 Buddha Machine

July 15, 2009 – Lately, it’s been the Masnick show, as he shows that artists can make money in today’s hostile business environment. The gist of his message is that to make money you have to connect with your fans and provide value outside of just the music. Wired magazine has a list of weird ways to distribute music. If you’re fans of the particular artists, then you would get real value out of the offerings. Who wouldn’t want a tiny music box that plays Mogwai’s guitar music? Or perhaps you’d be interested in FM3′s Buddha Machine which is supposed to contain a tiny Buddha that plays musical tones via a tiny speaker. Intrigued? I certainly am.

The main theme on the list seems to be something weird, and then an available digital download of that music. Cassettes, 8 track albums, t-shirts, all including a download code to get an album. When everyone can get your album free online, get them to buy stuff and give them your music for free. It’s a guaranteed way to get more sales. If you’re going to rely on downloads or physical album sales alone, it’s going to be tough. If you have stalkers, you can sell a strand of your hair with each CD as a thank you. Wait, maybe that’s not such a good idea.
