July 4th, 2009 – First off, I’d like to wish a Happy Independence Day to our American readers! May your weekend be full of liquor, barbeques, and pretty pyrotechnic displays. Anyways, back on topic…if you have any questions about songwriting, producing, or engineering, post them up! I can’t promise that I’ll be able to answer them, but if I can’t, I’ll find someone who knows more than me. If you are experienced in any of those topics and would like to write an article to be posted on this site, please drop me an email. My contact information is listed in the “Contact” page. Thanks!

  1. I have questions about songwriting.
My goal while learning to play the guitar was to learn enough about music so I can create new work. But well, I have a hard time to wrote something that got a duration of more than 30s, maybe 1 minutes top. Not to spoke about adding bass or a battery sometimes…
The easiest thing for me, at the moment, is writing short melodies – no chord, no bass, no battery most of the time.

So, any advice to advance would be great !

Also, I’ve found your explanation on EQ nearly perfect – substract more than add, find the frequency of the instrument. Could you talk to us about other effect in your rack ? Maybe some hint on dynamic, or the stereo image would be nice.

Something you’ve not speak alot about is mics. Allways interesting to learn more about them (I’m thinking about a SM57 to mic my amp, and record small singing part for example).

Or maybe simply speak to us about your work process? I feel there’s a lot more you can tell us about how you work with the artist, or what’s your feeling about your work and so on.

Maybe interview peoples about those question?

I’m glad I’ve stumble upon your blog some month ago – some invaluable information, some nice conversation. Allways a pleasure to come here and read your prose!

  2. @Sebastien Orban: Thanks! I’ll definitely try to cover your suggestions in upcoming posts!
