July 31, 2009 – The homebrew community has been finding ways to make music with Nintendo’s DS for a while now. But if you wanted to make music officially with the DS, you had to either use Jam Sessions or Korg’s DS-10. The problem with both of those titles is that they required you to use the stylus to make music (I guess that’s not a problem if you’re used to trackers anyways). Personally, I prefer an old-fashioned piano layout to make music, and without hacking the DS to accept MIDI, there aren’t very many options available.
In November, Namco/Bandai will release Easy Piano, a game that allows you to play up to 40 simple piano tunes. It includes a tiny one-octave keyboard that plugs into the GBA slot. It may not be much, but I’m sure some enterprising individuals will figure out a way to leverage the keyboard for other programs. That being said, I’m not sure that one octave is all that useful, but it’s at least a start.
