June 9th, 2009 – Looking somewhat like the love-child of a Thingamakit, and an NES Advantage controller, the Drone Machine by Unearthed Circuits is a 4 oscillator synthesizer that is controlled by a joystick, optical sensors, and knobs.
The joystick controls one of four oscillator settings, while the optical sensor (with a redundant knob) controls pitch. There is also a light (a la Thingamakit-syle) that can be strobed to create crazy pitch effects. One top of all that, there are built-in fuzz, ring mod, and overdrive effects.
Perhaps the most impressive part about the Drone Machine is the beautiful craftsmanship. It looks so fit and finished, that it could easily have come off a boutique assembly line. This thing should, nay, must be sold! Sound samples are available on the Unearthed Circuits site, and I’ve embedded a video of it in action below.
