June 15th, 2009 – These days it seems like we have less time to focus on one task at a time. Our attention is scattered all over the place, and it’s increasingly hard to get any work in the juggling act done well.

Many of us have jobs outside of music to supplement our passion, and I, for one, am finding it difficult to dedicate the time I want to writing and producing. For those who are working solely in the music industry, I imagine the push to work hard and stay afloat in trying times leaves little time for their own pursuits.

So how, dear readers, do you make time to work on your own music? Do you set aside a certain schedule every week, or do you forgo sleeping completely?

  1. This is the epic struggle. I’m no master at it, but I’m trying to move away from “doing music when I have some spare time” to “analyze my week and actually schedule blocks of time for music.”

I’m pretty bad at it right now, but the few times I’ve set aside something like three hours on a Saturday morning, it’s been refreshing to know that I blocked that time slot off, and I commit to it just like anything else on my calendar.

  2. Um, I’m unemployed, so setting aside time for music is not a huge problem. As my health improves, though, (I had a brain injury) and I start to work more, I expect this to be a MAJOR problem.

  3. @Jeff Shattuck : Actually, for some reason when I was unemployed I worked on less music. I think it had something to do with my perception of what my time was worth. Procrastination is my bad habit. I tend to only get things done when I’m already busy.

  4. @Joe Gilder : If only I could get up early on the weekends to work on music…but I like to sleep in on my days off. Then I get on with my day and by the time I realize what time it is, there’s no time for music. I’m bad a planning…gotta get on a disciplined schedule like yours.
