June 5th, 2009 – A couple weeks ago, I lamented that iTunes was too bloated. If I only want to listen to music, why should I have to deal with the resource heavy iTunes? If you’re a Windows user, you have plenty of great options, but many of the Mac music players are also bloated with features I don’t use.

The problem is, I like the way iTunes tags and organizes my music, so I continue to use it. Well now there is a free alternative. PicoPlay was developed by Mike Kronenberg to play music, and only play music. It accesses your iTunes library, but uses a fraction of the resources. It also, not surprisingly takes up a fraction of your screen. During my use, I observed half the RAM usage of iTunes, and approximately 10-15% less processing power.

One thing to keep in mind is that PicoPlay accesses iTunes through your playlists, so navigation is more like an iPod shuffle than an iTouch. Also, it’s only available for OSX Leopard, so if you’re on Tiger you won’t be able to use it. PicoPlay is available on Mike Kronenberg’s website for free.
