doubleTwist

June 13th, 2009 – Have all your music set up in iTunes, but don’t have an iPod or iPhone to sync to it? doubleTwist allows you to sync almost any device to your iTunes library and it performs all the necessary conversions for you. For example, if you have videos, doubleTwist will convert the file to a format that your device can view. You don’t have to know what is compatible with what, you simply drag and drop, and doubleTwist takes care of the rest.

doubleTwist is not only for syncing devices, it also attempts to be a social network where media is the common denominator. You create a “friends” list and they automatically get updates via “My Feeds”. If you have media that you want to share with people outside your doubleTwist network, the software will search your contact list and use your mail application to send them a link (hosted on the doubleTwist site). The software was developed by Jon Lech Johansen (aka DVD Jon, aka the MPAA’s biggest irritant), and is available for free download.

There doesn’t seem to be any ads built into the software, so I’m unsure how doubleTwist makes money. Perhaps they will find a way to monetize the doubleTwist community once they reach a certain threshold of users. Regardless, doubleTwist may prove invaluable for those who don’t want to drop the coin on Apple hardware, but already have an iTunes library.
