June 28th, 2009 – Following my trend of posting DIY projects on Sunday, today will be no exception. I was checking out the Audiologica website, when I came across instructions for putting together the CMoy Pocket Amplifier. Designed by Chu Moy, the CMoy Pocket Amplifier is a good starter project for the beginner DIY audio tweaker. The basic amplifier costs about $20 in components while a nicely speced version will cost about $50. Compared to the prices of headphone amps out there like Benchmark’s DAC1 at $1600, the CMoy is practically free. Of course, it probably wouldn’t be able to stack up to the Benchmark, but it’s more than adequate for the price, and probably better than amps costing magnitudes more.
Last month, I posted about another DIY headphone amp, but the CMoy is portable, and check out the slick re-purposing of the mint container the DIYer used in the pic above. Awesome! This is definitely a project I’d do to dust off my soldering skills before tackling the Monome kit I’m waiting to build.
