TapeScape Audio Robot

April 22nd, 2009 – Now that everyone has iPods and other portable music players, it’s considered bad etiquette to sling a boombox over your shoulder and blast your Kurtis Blow tunes for everyone to hear. So what’s one to do with such a monstrously large piece of obsolete plastic? If you’re the designer of the TapeScape, the answer is simple: build a robot.

TapeScape is a robot made completely out of an old tape-playing boombox. The current version is able to roll along and play magnetic tape that’s been lain on the floor. Right now, it’s not able to follow the tape intelligently, nor can it be remote controlled, but development is ongoing. The magnetic heads read audio and broadcast via FM radio, which can then be picked up by another stereo. The TapeScape is pretty rough right now, but listening to the output while its riding along a piece of tape, one can imagine the possibilites of such a toy. I’m envisioning several TapeScapes lined up on a toy car track side by side, each playing a separate instrument recording. It would be a TapeScape band!
