April 9th, 2009 – Lately I’ve been eager to get out there and make my own MIDI controller as is evidenced by the amount of arcade-button controller posts I’ve done lately. There are a lot of options out there including using an Arduino board, a MIDIDIY, or a UMC32. One of the interesting options out there is a piece of software called junXion.

junXion allows you to map any USB input device to MIDI signals that can be then read by your DAW. Joysticks, touchpads, keyboards; any pre-made USB input peripheral can be used.

This is particularly useful because you don’t need to build or buy a board that outputs MIDI signals. You can use your broken down 10 year old IBM keyboard and modify it into your own Monome or arcade-style controller. It’s also great for turning Rockband instruments into instant MIDI controllers.

junXion V4 is developed for the OSX platform and is available now for the equivalent of $123 CAD. It’s a little pricey, but it’s a very powerful and flexible piece of software. Does anyone have suggestions for something similar that’s Windows-compatible?
