Shimon Robot

April 26th, 2009 – Oh crap! As if it weren’t bad enough that Georgia Tech had already made drummers obsolete with their drum circle robot, they’ve gone on to improve their marimba bot. Dubbed the “Shimon Robot”, it looks like the software has been much improved, catapulting Shimon far beyond being just backup to the drum bots.

Not only does Shimon improvise melodies and rhythmic stabs by looking at the root chord played by the pianist (it looks like it reads the MIDI out), it can keep up with the tempo changes and improvisational changes of the human player. Watch the embedded video below and cower in fear.
