April 10th, 2009 – A few days ago, South Park, the animated Comedy Central show, skewered Kanye West. In the episode, Kanye is depicted as an egomaniac who cannot let go of the fact that he can’t understand an off-colour joke about him because he’s “a genius”.
Apparently he watches the program and when he saw the unflattering portrayal, he declared on his blog that he would try to “get past himself”. First of all, good for you Kanye. I think that, while his egotistical outbursts may have garnered him a lot of publicity, they may have started to negatively affect his image overall. Once or twice is cute, but this is one of the few times that consistency is not a good thing.
I am of the opinion that people still liked his music, even if they found his personality, at times, grating. My question for all of you is: has the personality of an artist ever directly affected your enjoyment of their music?

Great question. For me, the one artist whose personality absolutely affected the way I heard their music was Oasis. Back in the mid 90s I was watching a Behind the Music-type show, and Oasis was profiled. They were the snottiest, rudest, pull-no-punches bastards I’d seen come along in music for ages and I thought to myself, “Finally, some proper rock stars.” After the show , I went out a bought both their records — they only had two out at the time — and have stayed a fan ever since (although not so much of the music, which has never surpassed, or even come close, to the first two albums.
And Kanye, he’s stupid. I mean, he really, really is, or he just has no judgment.
