March 16th, 2009 – Wacom, industry leader of drawing tablets for the design industry, has created a DJ controller that, unsurprisingly for Wacom, includes touch controls. Other than the fact that a tablet maker is jumping into the music scene, what makes this DJ controller interesting is that it separates into two parts, as shown in the picture above. The core section with pitch and volume controls (although I’m sure people will hack them to do whatever they want) un-docks itself so that the controller can be taken into the crowd.
People are already taking interesting controllers into the crowd to connect with their audience, but the Wacom tablet is the first, that I’m aware of, to be specifically designed to take the core DJ controller out of the booth. If this product was released by any other computer peripheral manufacturer I might question it, but since it’s Wacom I’m sure that it will be a solid product. The release dates are set for Japan and Europe (this summer), but not for North America, which will only fan the flames of desire. Personally, I’ll wait until I see what creative people across the pond do with it. I’m still saving for my Vestax VCI-100.
