DIY Spherical Speaker Array

March 7th, 2009 – A couple days ago, I saw a MakeTV episode (embedded below) and one of the side notes was a speaker array that looked awesome. It was a wooden hemisphere with speakers coming out of all sides. Imagine my surprise when they went through how they created them with little more than a whole bunch of car speakers and an Ikea wooden salad bowl.

Today I was poking around on Instructables when I cam across a tutorial for how to make a spherical speaker array. It pretty much looks like two plastic versions of the MakeTV array, stuck together. I’d imagine that cutting through plastic salad bowls is a lot easier than wooden ones, and you can source your own colours. The most expensive part of the speaker array is the speakers, so if you have enough money (or know of a good surplus store), this could be a fun project. Keep in mind that car speakers aren’t powered, so you’ll need an amp that can keep up with the multiple speakers you’ll be mounting. Happy building!

  1. Ok, a spherical speaker is fun to do.
But well, why do it ? Is this really usefull (better sound or what else) ?

  2. @Sebastien Orban : It’s actually not as good a mod to do if you want to get good spatial separation. It’s mostly for fun, and it looks unique if you’re out doing performances.
