February 12th, 2009 – Shout-out to “ALF” for the linking me to Prominy. So here I am playing my guitar live and recording it for my tracks. Countless hours spent perfecting my playing; all wasted time. The Prominy LPC is to guitars what the Vienna Symphonic Library is to orchestral instruments. No more time spent trying to lay down a perfect guitar track for a song where no one’s going to notice it anyways. Just play it with your MIDI controller, and then quantize and fix it until it’s perfect. If you produce a lot of tracks, it’ll pay off the hefty $600 price tag in no time flat. For your money, you get 2 octaves of premapped samples and 60gigs of pure, un-adulterated rock.
If you can’t afford the $600 up front, you can buy either clean guitars, or distorted guitars for $350 each. Keep in mind, however, that LPC is only available in Kontakt format. You can visit their website and listen to demos of the possibilities. If you’re trying to rip up a Dream Theater-esque solo (one is linked below), you have to be careful with your pitch bends. If you’re not, the illusion will be broken. I’ve also linked a video below of one of the founders ripping it up. Close your eyes and you might not even be able to tell.

Is it faster to learn to play the guitar, or to play to the keyboard then mastering this particular sound bank ?

@Sebastien Orban : From the posts I’ve read, it seems that to be good at programming Prominy LPC, takes some practice. However, if you already play keyboard, the technique barrier is much lower with this method, than actual guitar playing at this level. If I were to play the Dream Theater song in the second video with a keyboard, I might be able to do it with only a couple hours practice, but to play it on guitar would take me much much longer.

This is really worldview shattering. I’m gonna convert to being a midi player now!
