February 2nd, 2009 – Getting writer’s block is never fun. Trying to write songs when your mind isn’t willing is a frustrating process at best. Last June, I posted about a particular method that I use to overcome this difficulty, and here’s a new one: the P22 Music Text Composition Generator.
This handy, and free, tool assigns text into music. It accomplishes this feat by, if I understand correctly, assigning musical values to letters and punctuation, via a map pre-determined by the natural occurrence and frequency of letters and punctuation in average English discourse.
All that gobbledygook aside, it’s a great way to get some melodies you wouldn’t naturally come up with yourself, by typing in something random. In the picture above, the music displayed was generated from the text I typed in the lower right hand corner. The MIDI is playable through a bunch of instruments selectable by a drop down menu. John Cage‘s legacy lives on!
