February 19th, 2009 – It’s not often that fully featured music software is released for free on the Mac platform. When it is, it’s like finding the end of the rainbow. It’s even rarer finding software that’s free and looks good.
Sinqube has released Kapling, a standalone physical modeling synthesizer, for free. It’s not a plug-in, so you’ll need to output the cool stuff you come up with to an AIFF file and then import it into your DAW. That’s a minor inconvenience to get something so cool for free. It was programmed using Max/MSP and for those who don’t know much about that language (me included), you can check out the comments in this post. Reader Jean-Francois Charles provides some good information there. Visit the Sineqube site to hear some samples of what the Kapling synth can do.

It would be nice if this worked as a plug-in, it currently is only standalone. As a standalone synth, though, it’s pretty interesting.

@James Lewin : Hopefully they’ll port a VST of it, but as long as I’m making shorter loops, the step sequencer does the job for me .
