February 1st, 2009 – I love hearing music from other countries. Even if the music is still in English, it comes from a different culture and it feels fresh. Even within the same genre, the differences are hard to put your finger on, but you know that it’s unique.
Here in North America, it’s difficult for me to fall hard for new music. Of course there are a few bands out there that surprise me, but the top40 is stuff that’s too familiar. That doesn’t mean I won’t like it, it just means that it doesn’t delight me in the same way something out of left field does. I’m sure that this effect also occurs for people outside of North America who aren’t normally exposed to our music, listening to our best.
Lately, I’ve been really into indie bands. I feel that they’re more willing to take risks and do their own thing, and this shows up creatively in their music. One band that has utterly dominated my attention is Voicst. They are a three piece band from Amsterdam consisting of Tjeerd Bomhof, Sven Woodside, and Joppe Molenaar. If I could classify their sound, I would say their music is power-pop with strong, punchy guitar riffs. They also frequently use horns, which are clearly samples on their most recent cd “A Tale of Two Devils”, but with live musicians onstage.
Voicst’s music is super catchy and uses infectious choruses, repeating vocal melodic riffs, and frequent lyrics regarding “exploding”. In previous posts, I’ve pointed to Vimeo as a place where I hear a lot of new music and it was there that I was first exposed to Voicst. Their whimsical video for “Feels Like a Rocket” got me hooked and, while it took a few listens to get used to their intensity, I’ve been listening to them regularly for months.
If you like super feel-good music, I would suggest taking a listen to Voicst. They are on my list of favorite bands.
