December 20th, 2008 – Proving once again that people will find ways to make music in the most obscure ways, MakerShed is selling a pencil that makes noises as you draw. The Drawdio is a pencil that has a basic synthesizer attached. It uses changes in the conductivity of the graphite to make noise. Now the act of writing is itself the music. How very zen! The sounds it produces are not so interesting by themselves, but combined with the visual impact, it’s an interesting gadget. By the way, I’m aware that this is not the first MakerShed product I’m posting about this week. Just so you know, they’re not a sponsor, I’m just doing holiday shopping there and have come across many doodads I want for myself.

You know would be even cooler? A pen that let’s you hear a melody as you draw it. In other words, as you draw a line going up, you would hear a melody going up, same with down. The Y axis could be same one octave per two inches, and the X axis could just be duration. I bet this would be a really interesting way to come up with interesting melodies.

@Jeff : That would definitely be a cool instrument. They have instruments that are sort of like that, the Kaoss pad being one example that comes to mind, but you use your finger and you don’t get the visual impact of an actual drawing.
