November 4th, 2008 – Who honestly doesn’t have fun playing Rockband or its sequel Rockband 2? It’s pretty much the best party game for the musically inclined. Well in the opposite vain of the previous hack I posted about allowing you to use your own electronic drums with the game, MacLife has released a hack that allows you to use your Rockband drums in Garageband.

Essentially the process involves mapping Garageband’s keyboard input, to the Rockband drums using downloaded software. While you could certainly program drums using a piano roll, or even a keyboard MIDI controller, there’s something to be said for recording in a more natural way (well as natural as you can get without recording honest to goodness “analog” drums). The drums sound more realistic, not only because you get your unique groove into it (provided you don’t quantize too much), but you also play rhythms that are more natural. This, of course, only works if you’re a decent drummer. It’s still fun to play around though.

PS. To all the Americans reading this: go out and vote! Go ahead, I’ll sit here and wait until you get back…want to play some Rockband after?

  1. I’ve been using the GamePad Companion and Xbox 360 Controllers app for a little while (since right after buying Rock Band 1) and it is always fun to mess around in Garage Band. I use to be a drummer and the lack of space and two kids now has meant that I don’t have room for my old drums, so this is a good enough way to get it out of my system (not as good as the real thing as you said, but good enough).

I’m glad to see there have been updates to apps though and look forward to them. I’m waiting to get Rock Band 2 and trying out the new drum set. Your right about the best party game, we have had a ton of Rock Band Jam Parties and hope to have more with RB2.

  2. @James Fleeting – I’ve been playing RB2 for the last week with just the game disc and the original drums. The new songs are really fun and I would say that the drumming styles are more diverse and complex (less just speed playing although there’s definitely a fair share of that as well). I would be interested in playing RB2 with the new drums and the expansion cymbals.
