November 12th, 2008 – Gibson is releasing the Dark Fire, a second generation “Robot Guitar”. Not only does this guitar have a gorgeous finish, and Gibson’s “Robot Guitar” tuning technology (supposedly it now makes the tuning changes in about a second), but it also features 3 pickups so you can make your ultimate blend of tone.
Besides it being one of the most beautiful and lust-worthy guitars I’ve ever laid eyes upon, the “Robot Guitar” technology allows you to tune into alternate tunings at the tap of the LED-lit knob. Imagine if John Mayer had this guitar, then no one would be able to figure out what chords he was playing since he could change tunings on the fly, even within the same song. You wouldn’t have to turn around to hide your playing, a la Van Halen, so that others couldn’t copy your licks (which is pretty lame anyways if you ask me). You’d just tap the button and be off into weird tuning scales.
Gibson is currently holding a contest to win one of these guitars (oh and also a trip to NY, but it’s the guitar you should really be interested in). From now until December 12th of this year, they are accepting YouTube entries for your original song about the Dark Fire. Residents of the US, UK and a several other European countries are welcome to join the contest (you can read more about the eligibility here), but I won’t be able to enter since I’m Canadian and apparently do not live in a big enough market. Am I bitter? Yes.
