November 6th, 2008 – Inspired by all the people doing creative things with the Arduino, like the ArduinoBoy I posted about before, I did some quick googling (yes, I just used Google as a verb) to find out more about it. In one of the videos I watched, a pretty crazy looking keyboard was being played using the Arduino. I noticed that it was being sold pre-packaged in a kit so I googled further and found it for sale on MakerShed.

The kit includes 4 pots and 25 keys (good for two octaves) and is meant to plug directly into your Arduino. You can find your local supplier for the Arduino here. There’s something about playing with an instrument that is not mass produced and is personal, that inspires you. I definitely want to make one of these pocket synths, as well as mod my old Gameboy to be controlled by a MIDI keyboard. For instruments, they’re pretty affordable and, if you make them yourself, you have a great backstory to tell people.
