August 21st, 2008 – I use a laptop for music production just in case I’ll need to take my set up out into the real world. Unfortunately, it’s difficult to lug all the different items I need with me even though I have very portable gear. Enter the Shaka Laptop Messenger bag. It’s designed to carry a 15 inch laptop along with a lot of other nick-nacks via its many pockets and pouches. One interesting thing is that it has a pocket that’s supposedly designed to be used for portable digital recorders. It even specifically names the Sony PCM-D50, of which I’m a proud owner. It comes in charcoal, brown, and olive and retails for $60 USD which is pretty good considering I saw a laptop sleeve for $80 CAD on sale tonight. I am considering adding this to my arsenal but am a little wary of buying nice designs I see over the internet after I got the Dosh wallet which looks great but is the least functional wallet I’ve ever owned.

Update 8-24-08: I received the following email from a representative from Namba regarding the Shaka Laptop Messenger bag Thank you for your posting in Key Of Grey re the new Shaka Laptop Messenger. I want to clear up a point which has been taken out of context in the reprinting of our press release. Yes, we promote that the Shaka is a perfect solution for a 15” laptop & hand-held digital recorder. Yes, there is a special pocket which was originally designed for larger cell phones which we discovered fit many of the smaller hand-held digital recorders perfectly (M-Audio MicroTrack II with mics detached as an example).

However, we never promoted this pocket specifically to carry any hand-held recorder. Our pocket is 6.5” tall and the Sony specs say that the PCM-50 is 6.125” tall but does not indicate if that includes the stereo mics/holder; the other dimensions are not in question. If the Sony is a little too tall to fit this specific pocket, there is another pocket that will accommodate the Sony, and it will also fit comfortably in the lockable back laptop compartment, alongside your laptop, as well.”
