August 31st, 2008 – I entered the Mariah Carey contest that I posted about a while back. To recap that post, Indaba is a site dedicated to music creators be they remixers, producers, or songwriters. Mariah Carey, or probably more accurately her management, provided Indaba with an opportunity to up its recognition in a sea of other music sites. In exchange, Mariah Carey would get to choose from a lot of good, and unknown, re-mixers for a pittance fee.
By entering the contest I learned a couple things about the Indaba community. A lot of people joined the site, like myself, specifically for the contest. As such, they had no qualms about spamming other users for votes. Normally, I wouldn’t mind this much, except that it works for some explicable reason; people vote when asked. This is quite a shame because the contest works by providing only the top 10 people as voted by the Indaba community, to get to the judging stage. This means that a lot of good remixes are not getting anywhere near the top ten while terrible, terrible remixes are ranking well.
Another thing I learned about Indaba, is that there are some genuinely talented people on there. There are a lot of great ideas, and skillful production on Indaba and it’s a shame that more people aren’t recognized. I actually enjoyed meeting the people I did through the site, and will continue to frequent it even with the problems that come along with all social media sites. I believe it’s a great resource to meet similar-minded people, even if you can’t break into the top seeds of their contests.
PS. Voting for the contest is still on, and you don’t have to be a member to vote. If you’d like to listen to my remix click here. If you like it and want to vote for it, even better! You have to provide your email address for verification of the vote (so the site doesn’t get spammed by fake votes from non-existent email addresses), but I’m sure that they won’t use your address for nefarious purposes.
