July 3rd, 2008 – I get easily distracted. Sounds of cars driving by my home, birds chirping; it takes very little to break my concentration. Part of the problem is that I, by default, hear all sounds as one whole, and my brain has to work in overdrive to focus on one sound. This is especially problematic when I need to concentrate on the work at hand.

Simply Noise is a website that plays white noise. You can only do two things on the site, adjust the volume of the white noise, and leave comments. I’ve never tried using white noise to help focus and calm, although I’ve heard that it works well (many people swear by it when they sleep at night). I have only been listening to it since I started writing this post, but already I feel more relaxed and my concentration is slightly improved. I’m certainly surprised at how such a simple concept works so well. Give it a try!
