July 18th, 2008 – This month John Mayer released “Where the Light is”. You can get it in 3 formats: double CD, DVD, and Blueray. Whether you his songs or not, you cannot deny his guitar playing. He is one of the best guitarists of our generation and just watching the way he plays can help you come up with ways to break out of your playing plateau. I’ve been playing the same picking and strumming patterns forever and watching his acoustic tracks on the DVD made me research the tab for “Stop This Train”. That picking pattern is pretty difficult and I can see it already opening new possibilites for my writing. Yes, I like John Mayer’s stuff, but I think everyone can learn at a least a little from him, whether it’s from his guitar playing or his pop song writing formulas.

  2. Agreed, that is my favorite track on the CD.

Mayer is good, but I find Jack White a more inspiring player. He reaches across a broader range of genres and styles and comes up with more original material.
